Sony XDcam launch
Sep 19, 2007 in Updates
I was at the Sony new XDcam launch at Hilton hotel last Friday. Sony invited our department to attend the launch and five of us went to attend the launch. It’s a very small event, in a small room, with the seminar in front and a few booths behind.
Surprisingly, there weren’t as much people as I had expected. The actual product will only be launch in Nov, and today is just an introduction on the product and to submit bookings if we are interested to buy.

The new Sony XDcam HD uses optical disc-based recording system, and it is equipped with two SxS PRO memory card slots. which can record up to 140 minutes of HD footage using two 16 GB SxS PRO memory cards. They added a new function which is the slide focus ring, which is two independent focus wheel mechanisms that can be switched by sliding the focus ring back and forth. I thought it’s an innovative creation but after playing around with the ring, I find that it’s not very usual friendly afterall, needs a lil bit of polishing.

One new function that I find useful is the Selectable Peaking. It helps the camera operators identify areas in the picture that are out of focus. It can enhance the outline of the image which the camera focuses on most, and changes its color to make it stand out.
All in all, they let us touch and play with the new toy, but ultimately, we will still need to own one to identify its good points as well as the bad ones. Funny thing is, nobody asked about the pricing! So I’m still clueless as to how much it cost…
I saw my long lost lecturer from Np and the terrible technical guys we have to face everytime we book out equipment back in school days.

I took some photos of the launch… got a nice laptop bag as a free gift too!
